Alessandro Zamichele showing us a cluster of Turbiana grapes in their vineyard.
Zamichele - Italy
Beginning life as dairy farmers and grape growers 100 years ago, the Zamichele family was raised with an appreciation for the lands and wildlife surrounding their family farm, just south of Lake Garda in Northern Italy. Eventually they decided to concentrate on growing their winery, which cross over the boundaries between the Lombardy and Veneto regions.
Their Lugana wines, made from the white turbiana grape, grown in what was once an ancient river delta, leaving a fertile clay soil. Running the winery today are cousins Alessandro and Giuseppe and their children, which pride themselves in their sustainably minded agricultural practices that honor the land and allow the local wildlife to thrive. Their commitment, passion, love for the land, mild climate and clean air make the production of valuable grapes, which stand out for their rich fragrances and great quality and deliciousness.
In fact, Alessandro even recalls fishing as a boy with a simple cane rod in the irrigation ditches running along side where he now grows turbiana, It is memories like these that inspired Zamichele to convert their winery and cantina to solar power. From hares sprinting across the vineyards, to butterflies flitting amongst the leaves, Zamichele is passionate about allowing their vines and winemaking process to be a part of the natural circle of life of the local region.
