Michi Lorenz - Austria
On the south side of the Sausal mountains in South Styria, Austria, lies natural winemaker Michi Lorenz and his estate. The area surrounding his family farm (a part of his family dating back to 1524), is the Südsteiermark subzon, or South Steiermark, known for some of the best sauvignon blancs in the world and for high profile natural wines.
Michi Lorenz owns 16 hectares, inherited from his family, of some of the best vineyards in the Südsteiermark. At an altitude of 620 meters, the very steep slopes under the vineyards are comprised of a slate-schist soil, allowing mineral qualities to come through in the wines.
Winemaker Michi Lorenz equates wine with music, like an art form, as he works to passionately craft natural wines. Certified biodynamic by Demeter, these Austrian wines are also farmed organically and naturally. With minimal intervention, meaning no added yeasts (only native yeast fermentation), and no added sugars or refining agents, the natural wines of Michi Lorenz allow the wild nature of South Styria come through in the glass.
